I absolutely love making people smile! I have worked in every area of dentistry and continued to specialize until I found orthodontics in 1988. It is fun, challenging, and rewarding; what more could anyone ask for?
One of the best parts is that I get to follow my patients and watch their smiles and personalities transform over time. I develop wonderful relationships with my patients, as does my team. We have been in practice at this location since 1992. We have become a large family over that time, and have been able to see our patients mature and grow into adulthood. It is so very rewarding to be able to develop those types of friendships.
Dedication to Education
I chose dentistry and ultimately orthodontics because of the difference that my braces made in my life as a 13-year-old military dependent living in Germany. That experience and the relationship I developed with my orthodontist and his family is what originally got me interested in dentistry. My orthodontist and his family played a significant role in helping me get where I am today. That is the kind of difference that I hope we can make in our young patients’ lives.
I received my undergraduate education at the University of South Carolina and attended dental school at the University of North Carolina. I finished my general practice internship through the United States Air Force. Both my pediatric dental specialty training and my orthodontic specialty training were completed at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College.
In today’s world of constantly advancing technology, so many new and exciting changes emerge in medicine and dentistry. There is no way to be the best orthodontist I can be if I am not current, educated, and informed. My goal is to stay 100% current on all new technology and information in my orthodontic specialty, in addition to staying informed on what is going on in the advancement of general dentistry.
To do so, I participate in ongoing educational meetings and continuing education accreditation through the American Association of Orthodontics, American Board of Orthodontists, Virginia Education & Research Foundation, Peninsula Dental Association, Tidewater Orthodontic Society, Virginia Dental Association, and Invisalign® seminars.
Outside the Office
My husband, two children, three big dogs, and I moved to Newport News when I resigned from my position as a professor at the Medical College of Virginia Dental School in Richmond. We have lived here for 26 years. My husband grew up in this area and we both love the proximity to the beach. We are all water people, including our Labrador Retrievers. We enjoy being on the water, boating, jet skiing, scuba diving, throwing tennis balls for the dogs, and watching sunsets or sunrises over the water.
